NUMBER OF SPANISH HOTELIERS’ BANKRUPTCIES HAS REACHED A HISTORICAL PEAK
The COVID-19 pandemic continues to put serious pressure on the rise in the number of bankruptcies in Spain. The main victim, as shown by the research conducted by the Axesor consulting company, is the HoReCa segment.

The number of bankruptcy petitions filed in 2021 increased by 303.85% compared to the previous year. If in 2020, 104 insolvency cases were considered by the courts from January to May, this year their number has grown to 420.

According to Axesor company, bankruptcies of bars, restaurants and hotels in absolute terms can be compared with the number of bankrupt trade enterprises (their number also increased by 206.45%, having affected 472 enterprises).

In the first five months of 2021, the number of bankruptcies increased by more than 76% and reached 2509 cases.

Last year, 1,422 bankruptcy cases were considered in the courts over the same period. In addition, this is 25% higher than in 2019, when the number of bankruptcies affected 2010 organizations and enterprises.

Spanish analysts note that the number of bankruptcies of enterprises in the area of leisure activities (art and entertainment) also increased by 125%. The insolvency proceedings affected 63 organizations. About 38% of all bankrupt enterprises are in the tourism-related sectors of the economy.

Axesor has noted an astounding rise in the number of insolvent institutions in the education sector.

After a 550% rise in the number of bankruptcies that took place in May (second after the hospitality industry in the same month, with 581% growth), the total figures for the first five months increased by 184.21% over the previous year. Insolvency proceedings affected 54 subjects of educational activity.

On the other hand, the Spanish economy showed positive dynamics in terms of the number of established enterprises during this period, note the local experts. Compared to 2020, when 29,738 new market participants were registered, in 2021, the number of registrations was 46,158. This is 55.22% more than in the same period last year.

Growth was more than 10% in all sectors of the economy.

The extractive industries stood out – there, the growth exceeded 115%. What is more, the spheres of healthcare (78.52%) and agriculture (73.53%) inspire optimism. For a country, the GDP of which fell by 11% over the past year, such indicators are the best that society can expect, due to the restrictions imposed by the spread of the disease.
