THIS DAY IN HISTORY:
24 November 1970 The United States and the USSR ratified the nuclear non-proliferation treaty.1970 The Central Committee of CPSU restored the national autonomy of the Kalmyks, Karachais, Balkars, Chechens and Ingush.1970 Charles Darwin published The Origin of Species - the first edition was sold out in a day.
The day before, it became known that the management of the online booking accommodation service Booking.com made a difficult decision to significantly reduce the number of its employees. The measure is associated with a large-scale decrease in the company's revenues due to the spread of coronavirus infection and subsequent restrictions.
According to the preliminary estimates, there will be 4,000 unemployed workers all around the world. This number is a quarter of all the employees of the service.
Booking Holdings, which owns Booking.com, has some other assets - two travel search engines and another online hotel booking service. However, Booking.com was and remains to be the most famous and popular among them.
Commenting on the situation, the company's management noted that the last five months, complicated by the COVID-19 pandemic, have become "the largest socio-economic crisis of our time," which has seriously affected the tourism and hotel business.
It is worth noting that not so long ago, the head of Federal Agency of Tourism of Russia announced a shortfall of 500 billion rubles in the Russian tourism industry, which was caused by the absence of foreign tourists due to the closure of the borders.
