BETEVÉ TV COMPANY OF CATALONIA IS ON THE VERGE OF BANKRUPTCY
The TV channel of Barcelona is in a state of financial crisis. According to the channel's management, if the wages of the employees are not reduced, Betevé could go bankrupt.
The municipal channel Betevé celebrated its 25th anniversary last year. Despite the pandemic, the broadcaster has won numerous awards. TV critics and the public alike praised the quality of the work of the journalists reporting on the news during the October 2019 protests over the judgments handed down to the leaders of the Catalan independence struggle.
The programs were broadcasted in the amount of more than 50 hours of broadcasting and gathered more than half a million TV viewers who followed the air. This result proved to be much more successful than the standard format presented by TV3, another popular Catalan television channel.
Despite the success with viewers, on July 23, the Betevé’s head Sergi Vicente met with the team of TV company, announcing the decision to fire nine employees.
Vicente announced his plans to rescue Betevé to 247 employees of the channel.
According to its head, the salary fund reaches more than 74% of the total revenue and amounts to ˆ 13 million. At the same time, work related to the creation of software products takes only 9% of the Betevé’s budget. In an interview with the Spanish media EL PAÍS, the director said: ‘There is no more money, but we must do the impossible to ensure the sustainability of the TV broadcasting’.
The director reminded the channel's employees that the Barcelona City Council has allocated more than ˆ 30 million for television since 2016, and the municipal authorities cannot ‘constantly help’ the channel. Vicente announced that he had cut his salary by 5%, asking colleagues to make a similar decision.
The employees of the channel, in turn, accused the director of the fact that his salary in recent years ‘has not stopped growing’.
In their opinion, the manager distorts the facts, misinterpreting financial losses as personnel costs. Many people associate the crisis situation on the channel personally with the director appointed to this position in December 2015.
We should remind our readers that the Betevé channel is broadcasting all over the world. Its potential audience is 3 million people, and broadcasting is available through HbbTV, IPTV, Movistar + services and on the TV company's website on the Internet.
