AIR FRANCE COMPANY IS AT RISK OF BANKRUPTCY

French national air carrier Air France runs the risk of going bankrupt if the government does not provide necessary financial assistance. This was stated by the Minister of Economy and Finance of France Bruno Le Maire during an interview with the local channel BFM. According to him, in this situation, the republic's authorities are obliged to support their own carrier in order to avoid it being included in the long list of airlines that have been ruined due to the pandemic.

Bruno Le Maire notes that Air France is a guarantee of national sovereignty, and therefore its protection is a strategic task. The minister promised that the financing of the company from the treasury would be continued until such assistance is needed.

Otherwise, the state program related to the mass vaccination of the population against COVID-19 may be under threat.

The crisis in the health sector, as well as the aggravation of the situation due to a new strain of infection, is forcing the French authorities to pay attention to the need to protect the carrier from ruin. Otherwise, the urgent transportation of vaccines and their use will be at risk of failure.

According to the Minister of Economy and Finance of France, significant time resources have to be spent on meetings on economic assistance, which are held at the level of the European Commission. Le Maire expressed hope that the deputy head of the organization, Margrethe Vestager, would be able to find mutual understanding on this issue with the French side. Under all circumstances, if Air France needs long-term support, it will be provided to the company, said the minister.

Last year, the French government allocated ˆ 7 billion to pay the company's costs caused by the pandemic.

ˆ 4 billion were issued to Air France in the form of government guarantees when receiving loans from banks, and ˆ 4 billion more as direct loans from the state.

Le Maire also noted that in response to financial assistance, the state would like to see reciprocal steps from the company, related to increasing competitiveness and gaining a leadership position in the field of ecology in the air transportation market. Investments should be beneficial, and the company should be an example of loyalty to the principles of sustainable development, noted the minister.
