THE DEFENDANTS IN THE BRIBERY CASE AT THE BALTIC PLANT WERE GIVEN PREVENTIVE MEASURES
THE DEFENDANTS IN THE BRIBERY CASE AT THE BALTIC PLANT WERE GIVEN PREVENTIVE MEASURES
In St. Petersburg, the district court decided on preventive measures. They have been imposed on several defendants in a bribery case at the Baltic Shipyard, one of the country's largest shipbuilding enterprises. The company is part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC). Two specialists of the company were placed under arrest until May 10. The court ordered house arrest for three more.
The investigation concerns bribes, which, as the investigation suggests, have been transferred over the past five years. During this time, according to the investigative authorities, participants in the criminal scheme could have caused damage to the plant in the amount of up to 5 million rubles, although some law enforcement sources previously reported that the amount could reach 15 million.
According to investigators, Alexey Shaganov played a key role in this story. He worked as a senior foreman. According to the prosecution, he forced his employees to give part of the salary to him personally. In exchange, subordinates were offered assistance, they were given higher labor participation rates, on which the salary directly depends.
To those who refused to participate in this corrupt scheme, Shaganov could underestimate these figures, depriving them of part of their income. In addition to Shaganov, another workshop foreman and the head of the production site are involved in the case. Both of them were taken into custody. The court placed Shaganov and two other employees under house arrest.
The case is being investigated under several articles of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. We are talking about giving and receiving bribes (including especially large amounts). In total, within the framework of this investigation, the grounds for which were revealed on March 11, the investigative authorities count nine suspects.
Meanwhile, this corruption story was not the only reason for concern for the Baltic Plant. Earlier it became known about the difficult financial situation at the enterprise. Despite the fact that the plant completed 2024 with a profit, the management acknowledged that due to accumulated debt obligations, the risk of bankruptcy is still high.
The company's published annual report talks about the possibility of financial collapse. In 2016, the plant was already going through insolvency. Then, as a result of the trial, a settlement agreement was concluded with a debt amount of 6.7 billion.
The management of the Baltic Plant claims that the current situation with the criminal case has not affected the work of the enterprise. Production processes continue in the usual format. Currently, the company employs about 5,5 thousand employees. At the same time, dozens of job offers with competitive salaries are posted on popular job search portals. For example, welders are offered a monthly salary of 100 thousand, and machine operators — from 120 thousand. However, in the light of current events, questions about the internal personnel management policy and compliance with anti-corruption standards remain open.
