THE NUMBER OF RUSSIANS WITH LOANS HAS REACHED 50 MILLION
The number of citizens with loans has reached 50 million, the Bank of Russia cited statistics as of January 1, 2024. This is more than 40% of Russian citizens over the age of 16. The total amount of debts of Russians in 2023 increased by 6.4 trillion rubles.

As the Central Bank notes, the number of citizens using credit products continues to grow. At the beginning of this year, their number reached 50 million people. Of these, 42 million people owe only to banks, 3.9 million – to banks and microfinance organizations, 4 million – only to microfinance organizations.

As the Central Bank noted, in 2023, the number of citizens with loans only from banks increased by 4.3 million people. Borrowers of microfinance organizations – by 500 thousand. The total debt of citizens amounted to 34.8 trillion rubles, of which 4.5 trillion rubles is the debt of borrowers on mortgages.

At the same time, the debt of citizens with three or more loans is half of the total debt. The number of such borrowers increased by 2.7 million over the year.

The regulator is trying to reduce the number of loans issued by credit institutions, as it traditionally considers the growth of creditworthiness of citizens to be a risky phenomenon. So, starting in 2019, banks and microfinance organizations must calculate the indicator of the borrower's debt burden – the ratio of payments on all available loans and borrowings to the average income of a citizen.

The debt load indicator is directly proportional to the credit load of a person. Based on this indicator, limits on the issuance of loans and macroprudential allowances are formed (risk coefficients used in assessing loans issued: the higher the indicator of the borrower's debt burden, the greater the surcharge, while the bank requires more money to issue a loan).
